The transition from 2025 to early 2026 has been marked by escalating tensions involving the island of Greenland and contemporary geopolitical changes associated with the expansion of the North American containment zone in response to Chinese-Russian expansion and projects in the Arctic. This process points to a partial shift of the Rimland to the northern hemisphere, creating a field of tensions marked by the imminence of state, military, and economic projects in the Arctic region. Given this context, this article seeks to analyze contemporary tensions, the possible formation of a new pivot region, and questions about the eventual end or expansion of the classic geopolitical regions known as Heartland and Rimland. Methodologically, a bibliographic survey was conducted on classical geopolitics, the Heartland and Rimland theories, as well as on contemporary geopolitics and the Arctic. The research indicates the formation of a zone of contention around a “contemporary pivot region,” accompanied by the production of discourses and representations aimed at legitimizing possible strategic actions by the United States in the Arctic.
